Claire Ryan graduated with an honours degree in Applied Physics (BSc) and an MSc (by research) from the University of Limerick (UL). She spent 3 years working as materials engineer at a campus spin-off company in UL carrying out consultancy and research in the area of electronics reliability and materials testing. She is currently employed as a research fellow at the Stokes Institute, UL, working on industrial research projects funded by the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). She is collaborating with Alcatel-Lucent in the US on a study of lead-free solders under the CTVR program. The project involves examining the microstructure of SAC alloys of varying composition and manufacturing conditions using microscopy techniques and testing using methods such as temperature cycling and drop testing to determine reliability. She is a member of the technical and steering committees of SMART Group Ireland and was recently appointed vice-chairperson. She is also member of ELFNET (European Lead Free Network) where she has organised a number of seminars on electronics reliability. In 2005 Claire was awarded the Soldertec Global award for her research on lead-free solders.
