Dr. Damien King graduated with an honours degree in electronic engineering from the University of Limerick in 2001. He then undertook a postgraduate position with the Optical Fibre Sensors Research Centre in the department of Electronic and Computer Engineering and in 2005 received the award of Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Limerick for work undertaken in the area of developing multipoint optical fibre sensor systems for environmental monitoring applications and applying artificial neural network pattern recognition techniques to the resulting sensor system signals. He joined the Stokes Research Institute in 2006 as a postdoctoral research fellow where his research interests include the design of various optical fibre based sensors and integrating these sensors into complete fibre optic based monitoring systems for civil structures, along with determining the commercial potential of such monitoring systems. Dr. King is a member of the IEEE and the Institute of Physics and has published numerous peer-refereed journal and conference papers.
