Dr. Giorgio Nosenzo received a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, Italy, in 1999 presenting a project on the performances of fibre optic sensors embedded in composite materials. He then joined the European Commission Joint Research Centre working with the Photonics and Diagnostics Group and studying different type of fibre optic strain sensors for aeronautic applications. He received his PhD from the University of Limerick in 2004 after completing a project on the development of structural monitoring techniques for composite structures using FO sensors and FE model updating procedures. He has taken part in a number of commercial and research projects in the areas of monitoring and active control of composite structures. His present fields of research cover the design of different types of fibre optics sensors and the development of complete fibre optics based monitoring system for civil structures together with the analysis of the commercialisation potential of such systems.
