Dr. Philip Griffin graduated from the University of Limerick in 1999 with a first class honours B.Sc. degree in Industrial Chemistry. Subsequent to this, he commenced doctoral research at the University into the effects of freestream turbulence on loss in gas turbine blade boundary layers and was awarded a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering for this work in 2003. Since early 2003, he has been employed as a Research Fellow at the Stokes Research Institute within the department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering and has been involved in both industrial research projects (Nokia Mobile Phones, Finland and Molex Ireland Inc.) and in academic research on microfluidic device design for the medical diagnostics and bioprocess technology sectors. Additionally, he is actively involved in the teaching of undergraduate engineering courses in thermofluids and in the supervision and examination of final year engineering theses on aerodynamics, heat transfer and microfluidics within the department. Dr. Griffin’s core competencies lie in the field of fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer with particular emphasis on their application to important problems in aerospace, chemical processes and biotechnology. His research interests include:

Aerodynamic boundary layer flows, turbulence and vortex dynamics.

Experimental and computational techniques in fluid dynamics.

Microscale fluid-flow, heat, mass transfer and membrane separation processes.

Surface/interface dynamics and multiphase flows.

Reliability engineering

Dr. Griffin holds full membership with Engineers Ireland, the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
