Yuri Muzychka was born in St. John’s, NL and graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland (B.Eng., 1993). Dr. Muzychka attended the University of Waterloo from 1993-1999 and obtained a Masters of Applied Science (1995) and Ph.D. (1999) in Mechanical Engineering. From 1993-2000, he worked in the Microelectronics Heat Transfer Laboratory on numerous problems in electronic packaging, heat exchangers, tribology, and heat transfer and fluid flow fundamentals in internal flows.

Before joining Memorial University as an assistant professor in 2000, he held an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Waterloo, and was a part time research consultant for R-Theta, Inc., a manufacturer and developer of electronics cooling systems. In 2004 he received the Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award and in 2005, he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure.

As a thermo-fluid analyst, his research is focused on the development of robust models for characterizing transport phenomena using fundamental theory. These models are validated using experimental and/or numerical results. He has published approximately 35 papers in refereed journals along with 35 papers in international conference proceedings in these areas.

He currently directs research in the Microfluidics and Multiphase Flow Research Laboratory at Memorial University of Newfoundland.  Presently, his research is focused on the modeling of complex fluid dynamics and heat transfer problems in internal flows. These include transport in porous media, compact heat exchangers, two phase flow in oil and gas operations, micro-channel flows, non-continuum flows, and non-Newtonian flows. He also undertakes research in electronics packaging, contact heat transfer, and thermal design/optimization of energy systems.

He is currently a visiting professor at the Stokes Research Institute at the University of Limerick.
