Professor Suresh Goyal received his BTech degree (1982) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, his MS (1984) from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and PhD (1988) from Cornell University, Ithaca, all in Mechanical Engineering. After a year as a postdoctoral fellow in Computer Science at Cornell University, Suresh joined Bell Labs Research (then the research arm of AT&T and now Lucent Technologies) in 1989 where he has been since. At Bell Labs, Suresh has led a research program on developing the scientific and technological basis for designing impact-tolerant products. Suresh has done theoretical work that has advanced fundamental understanding of impact-mechanics, shock-protection and cushioning; novel experimental work in support of the above; and developed concrete design guidelines and computer simulation tools to aid in the design of rugged equipment. Much of the work was done in close collaboration with Lucent’s various business units, in the context of actual Lucent products like cellular phones, business mobile phones, cordless phones, notebook computers, equipment with fragile MEMS components, and other network equipment. This work has won 2 best paper awards at international conferences, several patents, several internal Lucent awards, and has been profiled in International media. Currently Suresh is leading a multi-disciplinary effort within Lucent to significantly lower the cost of our photonic systems and complete network offerings.
