welcome to the Stokes Research Institute

The Institute has provided consultancy on product development for the Irish R&D centre of a US-based provider of broadband access solutions. Thermal design was performed on two products, a fan-cooled headend system for cable operators and a cable modem product for home users. The designs were validated using simulations and prototype tests, and reliability predictions were carried out to assess the products’ expected field life. Acoustic characterisation was also carried out on the fan-cooled system.

Thermal design solutions were provided for the UK Technology Centre of a Silicon Valley broadband wireless technology start-up. Two aspects of a high-speed internet access system were addressed, the network infra-structure and the user equipment. An intrinsically-reliable passive cooling solution was implemented for an outdoor base station, and the thermal design of a portable wireless modem was performed to ensure a reliable and user friendly product.
