A novel passive cooling configuration was developed for a family of three rack-mounted open-frame DC-DC converters designed by the Irish division of a German Power Conversion company. An existing single sink was replaced by twin extruded heat sinks, one for each side of each supply, achieving considerable savings in weight, size and cost.

Thermal and mechanical design was completed for a 3.6kW DC-DC converter developed by PEI Technologies for a German client. Heat losses were approximately 0.5kW and, to provide adequate cooling, a custom bonded-fin heat sink with an integral fan was developed. An aluminium chassis and casing were designed to house the converter.
