Stokes Commences Participation in Airbus Coordinated FP7 Project
Dr. David Newport of the Stokes Institute is co-ordinating the University of Limericks activities in the FP7 Aeronautics Integrated Project “MAAXIMUS” (More Affordable Aircraft through Extended Integrated and Mature Numerical Sizing). MAAXIMUS is co-ordinated by Airbus and involves some 58 industrial, research and academic partners with a €40M budget over 5 years. The project kick-off was April 2008. The University has secured in excess of €1M with activities centred on the Stokes Institute and the Composites Research Centre of the MSSI. The Stokes Institute is involved on thermal analysis topics, building on current experience in aircraft heat transfer. For further information please contact Dr. David Newport (david.newport@ul.ie).
GASMEMS Commences:
The Stokes Institute is a partner in a new European Commission 7th Framework Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) entitled “GASMEMS”. The project kick-off meeting took place in Toulouse on the 13th & 14th November and is part of the FP7 People Programme. GASMEMS will run for four years, coordinated by INSA-Toulouse, a long term collaborator of the institute. The project will provide advanced training in gas flow microfluidics for researchers in the early stages of their career, and involves 19 European partners. Stokes will recruit one Experienced Research (post PhD) and one Early Stage Researcher (pre-PhD) to develop experimental techniques to quantify local flow parameters in gas microflows. Researchers will benefit from training periods at partner institutions, summer schools, network workshops and conferences and will be exposed to all aspects of gas microfluidics: modelling and simulation, experimental techniques and measurement, materials and manufacturing, and industrial applications across thematic areas of microfluid dynamics, heat transfer and gas material interactions. The project website can be found at http://www.microfluidique.insa-toulouse.fr/gasmems.htm and further details can be found from Dr. David Newport (david.newport@ul.ie)
1st European Conference on Microfluidics mFlu’08
Stokes will be participating in the upcoming Microfluidics conference to be held in Bologna from the 10th to the 12th December 2008. Full details of the conference can be found at http://www.microfluidique.insa-toulouse.fr/mf08.htm
SRI Researcher Wins Soldertec Global Award
Claire Ryan, a research fellow at the SRI, has been announced as the recipient of Soldertec Global's "Outstanding Researcher" for 2005 under their Lead-Free Solder Awards programme. Claire was selected from a group of industry-nominated candidates in recognition of her work on torsional fatigue, environmental effects on lead-free solder and for the development of a lead-free training course.
