The theme of this project is a mechanical energy storage technology suitable as an alternative to electrical batteries in small-scale or portable electronic applications. The objective of the project is to design and fabricate a miniature flywheel, and to verify its stability and reliability for rotational speeds up to 500 kRPM.
An investigation involving design, fabrication and experimentation is in progress, and its main outcome will be to prove the feasibility of a miniature high-speed flywheel as the basis of a rapidly rechargeable, high capacity energy storage device. The project is a precursor to a future technology development programme.
